Officials in Republika Srpska have initiated efforts to commemorate and publicize the historical suffering of the Serbian people during the conflicts of the 1990s. In East Sarajevo, leaders observed a day of remembrance for victims of NATO airstrikes from 1994 and 1995. President Milorad Dodik characterized the bombings as a “crime without precedent,” while other officials noted the long-term health consequences of depleted uranium ammunition used during those operations. Expanding this focus internationally, the Memorial Center of Republika Srpska launched a digital campaign in Rome titled ‘Learn About Serbian Suffering’. ~~Utilizing~~ Running from September 7 to 13, the initiative utilizes large LED screens in ~~central~~ prominent locations such as Piazza della ~~Repubblica~~ Repubblica, Via Nazionale, Castel Sant’Angelo, and near the ~~Vatican, the initiative seeks~~ Vatican to educate the European public on civilian persecution and wartime experiences. The campaign features more than 1,500 collected audio-visual testimonies, archival documents, and historical facts. Director Denis Bojić stated the goal is to ~~present testimonies~~ ensure the Serbian voice is heard internationally and to prevent “political pressures from replacing historical truth.” Italian researcher Lorenzo Bernasconi of ~~victims outside~~ the Machiavelli Foundation noted that the history of ~~Serbian territories~~ the wars in the former Yugoslavia remains “insufficiently known” to ~~counter existing political interpretations and stereotypes.~~ the Italian public despite the geographic proximity of the Balkans.
