Branko Blanuša, leader of the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS), has engaged in political maneuvering and controversy within Republika Srpska. Initially, Blanuša proposed the creation of a specialized ‘Office for the Protection of Citizens’ Interests’ within the Service of the President of Republika Srpska to address grievances regarding political favoritism.

As the presidential election approaches, Blanuša has emerged as a leading candidate. Pre-election polls conducted by Metrics Consulting for Electoral Unit 6 indicate that Blanuša holds a lead in the presidential race with 38.0% support, compared to 34.5% for Savo Minić. Statistical modeling accounting for undecided voters projects Blanuša at 47.7% and Minić at 42.5%.

Blanuša’s candidacy has been complicated by leaked footage from July 7 showing him meeting with SNSD organizational secretary Igor Dodik. Blanuša defended the meeting as a necessary discussion regarding how U.S. sanctions have hindered the SDS’s ability to access its legally mandated budget, dismissing the leak as a “political stunt” by ruling authorities.

The incident has caused internal friction within the opposition; Ljubiša Petrović, the Mayor of Bijeljina and an SDS member, demanded a formal explanation because the party membership was not informed of the meeting. Conversely, Jelena Trivić, President of the Narodni front, defended Blanuša, characterizing the video as a “regime trick” intended to damage his reputation. Blanuša has since accused the ruling parties of conducting an ‘unprecedentedly dirty campaign’ using media misinformation and distorted surveillance footage.

Other polling data shows Željko Cvijanović leading for the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina with 34.6%. For the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the SNSD leads with 29.0%, followed by the SDS at 26.6%.
