Research on biological aging and longevity mechanisms

Overview

Scientific research has identified several environmental and dietary factors that may influence biological aging and cellular health.

Researchers at the University of Cologne published a study in the journal Nature regarding the effects of moderate cold exposure. The study found that moderate cold stimulates the production of the metabolite dihydrobiopterin (BH2) in muscle tissue. This compound converts into tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), which helps maintain protein balance and prevents the accumulation of harmful proteins. Experiments on C. elegans nematodes showed that exposure to 15 degrees Celsius activated this pathway and extended lifespan. Tests on human cells associated with Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also indicated that BH2 helped reduce abnormal protein accumulation.

Complementary research published in Cell involving institutions such as NYU Langone Health and the National Institutes of Health examined the impact of caloric restriction. The study found that mice on a 30% calorie-restricted diet accumulated fewer DNA mutations in their tissues compared to those with unrestricted food access, though the effect varied by tissue type.
