Research into canine cognition continues to highlight the ability of dogs to recognize human behaviors and emotions. Studies from the University of Vienna, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and Eötvös Loránd University have utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to demonstrate that dogs can distinguish specific human facial expressions, including happiness, anger, fear, and sadness. Brain activity patterns reveal that dogs do not merely categorize expressions as positive or negative; they possess distinct neural signatures that allow them to differentiate between specific negative emotions. Happy human faces specifically activate brain regions associated with reward and cognitive processing, such as the temporal cortex and the caudate nucleus, suggesting that human smiles hold significant motivational value. Recent findings published in the journal iScience, involving researchers from the University of Vienna and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, provide scientific evidence that dogs can distinguish between various negative emotions, such as differentiating fear from anger. Researchers Raúl Hernández-Pérez and Laura Cuaya suggest these abilities may be an evolutionary adaptation developed through domestication to facilitate better cooperation and understanding with humans. Future research aims to explore how dogs integrate additional sensory cues, such as scent, vocal nuances, and body language, to interpret human intentions. In addition to cognitive research, new genetic studies have challenged the traditional ‘seven-year rule’ used to calculate canine age. By analyzing DNA methylation patterns in Labrador Retrievers, scientists have developed a more accurate mathematical formula based on an epigenetic clock. This research indicates that dogs age much more rapidly during their early life stages before the rate of aging slows in adulthood. Under this new logarithmic formula, a one-year-old dog is biologically closer to a 31-year-old human than the previously assumed seven years.
