Research on GDF15 biological functions

Overview

Research regarding the hormone Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) has expanded from its role in cellular dynamics to its systemic protective functions.

Initial findings established that GDF15 is essential for mitochondrial quality control in human skin fibroblasts. A deficiency in GDF15 was found to cause a fission deficit in mitochondria, disrupted hypoxia signaling, and impaired extracellular matrix coordination, which affects wound healing and tissue aging.

Subsequent research from McMaster University identified a new role for GDF15 in protecting the liver from inflammation and fibrosis. This study revealed a signaling pathway where GDF15 communicates from the brain to the liver via the nervous system to trigger glucocorticoid release. These protective effects appear to function independently of weight loss or fat levels, offering potential new therapeutic avenues for treating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).
