Overview

Recent clinical research has challenged the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids and fish consumption in preventing Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline.

A two-year study of 365 adults found that while omega-3 supplements increased docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels in cerebrospinal fluid, they did not improve memory or slow brain tissue loss. Neurologist Hussein Yassine noted that these supplements ‘do not work as a universal solution’ for preventing decline.

Subsequent research from Tufts University, utilizing target trial emulation, further questioned the link between fish intake and long-term Alzheimer’s risk. While researchers acknowledged fish as a healthy food choice, the study suggested it may not be a ‘magic bullet’ for disease prevention. These findings have sparked debate regarding the role of dietary supplements versus whole foods in neurodegenerative health.
