Restitution of Nazi-looted art

Overview

Recent legal and institutional actions have resulted in the restitution of artworks looted by the Nazi regime.

In Germany, the Bavarian National Museum is returning two 15th-century reliefs to the heirs of Jakob Goldschmidt, a Jewish banker. Provenance research, supported by a 1933 photograph, confirmed the pieces were taken from Goldschmidt’s Berlin villa during the rise of the Nazi regime.

In Argentina, an Argentine federal judge has ordered the restitution of the 18th-century painting ‘Portrait of a Lady’ to Marei von Saher, the heir of Dutch-Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker. The artwork, missing for approximately 80 years, was discovered in a Mar del Plata real estate advertisement.

The painting was held by Patricia Kadgien, the daughter of Friedrich Kadgien, a former SS financier who fled to Argentina after the war. Following identification of the work by Dutch journalists, Kadgien and her husband, Juan Carlos Cortegoso, were charged with aggravated cover-up and placed under house arrest.

To avoid a full criminal trial, a legal agreement was reached: the couple will undergo two years of court supervision and make donations to local hospitals in exchange for renouncing claims to the work. While the painting was initially attributed to Giuseppe Ghislandi, experts from the National Academy of Fine Arts now suggest it may be by Giacomo Ceruti. Von Saher intends to temporarily loan the painting to the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires to raise awareness about Nazi-era looting.
