The Rewe Group is expanding its service offerings and diversifying its retail presence in Germany. The company has launched an instant grocery delivery service in partnership with Uber Eats, Wolt, and Lieferando, aiming to deliver products within one hour. This service has debuted in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, and Jena, with plans to expand to more major cities and eventually smaller towns by the end of the year. Clemens Bauer, head of Rewe’s e-food business, noted that while rapid delivery faced sustainability challenges during the pandemic, it remains a growth area driven by younger consumers. Beyond rapid delivery, Rewe offers a broader grocery delivery service via its website and mobile app. This service includes a recipe-based feature that allows users to add all necessary ingredients for a meal to their cart with a few clicks, functioning similarly to a meal kit service. Delivery availability and fees vary by region, with minimum order values typically between 40 and 60 euros. Orders are fulfilled through local markets or specialized logistics centers. In addition to digital expansion, the group maintains a diverse range of physical market formats across approximately 3,800 locations. These include locations, including Rewe City for urban areas, the City, Rewe to go convenience format, large-scale go, Rewe Center locations, Center, and standard neighborhood Rewe supermarkets. Further strengthening its market position, Rewe has significantly expanded its ‘ja!’ private label. Originally launched in 1982 with just 28 basic products to counter pressure from discount retailers, the brand now offers an assortment of over 1,400 items. The brand utilizes a minimalist design with white packaging and a simple blue logo to maintain price competitiveness. Since 2021, the company has conducted over 100,000 customer tests on ‘ja!’ products, which reportedly earned an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
