Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s last Shah, has launched a campaign calling for the liberation of Iran. He characterized the current regime as a ‘criminal sect’ and labeled the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as ‘terrorist,’ asserting that the leadership’s control over national institutions has caused economic and security deterioration. Pahlavi stated he has a plan to overthrow the government and manage a transition to ensure stability and fundamental freedoms. Expanding his efforts to the international stage, he visited the European Parliament to urge the European Union to adopt a tougher stance against Tehran. He suggested the EU demonstrate the same resolve toward Tehran as it does toward Vladimir Putin. His proposed measures include the expulsion of diplomats, stronger economic sanctions, and cutting networks linked to the regime. He also called for EU collaboration with technology companies to secure uncensored internet access for the Iranian people. During his visit to Brussels, Pahlavi framed his role not as a monarchist leader, but as a “bridge” to a future democracy, which he stated should ultimately be decided via a referendum. While receiving support from some European politicians, his candidacy has faced criticism from certain members of the European Parliament who argue the Iranian struggle is for democracy and human rights rather than a return to a monarchy. In November 2026, Pahlavi accepted the Freedom Prize from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Frankfurt, an Frankfurt. The award was presented on behalf of the Iranian people to recognize their struggle for freedom. The foundation stated the award was intended to honor the Iranian people, freedom, with Pahlavi acting as a temporary custodian until it can be handed to freely elected representatives. The ceremony at Frankfurt’s Paulskirche was accompanied by significant demonstrations, including a rally of approximately 20,000 people in Ostpark and a march of 9,000 through the city center.
