Rio de Janeiro law enforcement operations

Overview

Law enforcement agencies in Rio de Janeiro have conducted separate operations targeting different criminal activities.

Federal Police launched the second phase of ‘Operation Castratio’ to investigate a criminal organization suspected of defrauding the Rio de Janeiro State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. The investigation focuses on irregularities in animal sterilization and castration contracts worth approximately R$ 200 million, involving allegations of bid rigging and overpricing. Federal Deputy Marcelo Queiroz, a former state Secretary of Agriculture, is a primary target of the probe.

Separately, the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police dismantled a network specialized in the sexual exploitation and violence against adolescents. The operation led to the arrest of eight suspects, including a parliamentary advisor and a Military Police sergeant. The group reportedly used explicit recordings to blackmail and coerce victims through psychological extortion.
