Rio Tinto is pursuing long-term copper growth through various strategic investments and production expansions. In August 2026, the company considered a 15 million USD strategic entry into Mogotes Metals Inc. following the identification of new copper-gold-silver-molybdenum systems at the ‘Albor’ site. This potential investment comes as the International Energy Agency projects a 25% global copper supply deficit by 2035. By late August 2026, Rio Tinto Canada finalized a US$15 million (approximately C$21 million) strategic investment in Mogotes Metals. Through the subscription of roughly 30.39 million units at C$0.70 per unit, Rio Tinto secured an initial stake of approximately 5%. This investment establishes a strategic and technical alliance to advance the Filo Sur copper-gold-silver project in the Vicuña district, spanning Argentina and Chile. The agreement includes the formation of a joint technical committee and the use of Rio Tinto’s proprietary geoscience tools. Rio Tinto has also secured a 15-month exclusivity period on the Filo Sur project and maintains rights to increase its ownership up to 9.99% on a partially diluted basis. The alliance may potentially extend to other regions, such as Kazakhstan. Simultaneously, Rio Tinto is leveraging its Oyu Tolgoi operation in Mongolia to drive growth. Copper production at the site increased by 31% in the first half of 2026, with expectations that the mine will produce an average of 500,000 tonnes of copper annually between 2028 and 2036, potentially becoming the world’s fourth-largest copper mine by 2030.
