Health statistics in South Korea indicate a rise in specific chronic conditions and obesity rates. Data shows an upward trend in gout cases, which reached 553,524 patients in 2024, representing an 18% increase since 2020. This trend is particularly notable among younger men in their 20s and 30s. Additionally, carpal tunnel syndrome remains highly prevalent, especially among women in their 50s. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), obesity rates among men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s have all surpassed 50%. Middle-aged men are also experiencing increased prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. These shifts are linked to changing health behaviors, including decreased physical activity and dietary changes such as increased intake of meat and sugary beverages. Results from the ‘2025 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey’ reveal further deterioration in health indicators. The obesity rate for men in their 30s rose significantly from 49.1% to 59.0% in a single year, while the rate for men in their 50s reached 54.0%. Diabetes prevalence among men in their 50s also saw a sharp increase, rising from 16.6% to 24.3%. While alcohol consumption improved among younger populations, tobacco use increased among men in their 20s and women in their 30s. Physical activity levels declined across most age groups, alongside dietary shifts toward higher fat and beverage consumption and lower fruit and vegetable intake. KDCA Commissioner Lim Seung-kwan noted that these varying risks require “targeted policy approaches.”
