Rising German vehicle repair and insurance costs

Vehicle repair and maintenance costs in Germany have experienced a significant surge, with average repair costs reaching approximately 4,600 euros. This represents a 70 percent increase over the last decade, a rise that significantly outpaces general consumer price inflation.

Key drivers of these costs include a 62 percent increase in workshop hourly rates since 2017 and an 80 percent rise in spare parts prices since 2016. Insurers note that manufacturer design protections often mandate expensive original components, further inflating expenses. While electric vehicle inspections are generally 33 percent cheaper than internal combustion engine services, specialized tasks remain costly, and some workshops have increased EV hourly rates to offset lost revenue from traditional services.

These rising expenses are placing pressure on the German motor insurance industry. The German Insurance Association (GDV) projects a fragile recovery for insurers, with a predicted loss ratio of 99 percent for 2026. Although premium income is expected to rise by nearly 7 percent, claim payouts are projected to increase by more than 10 percent due to the escalating cost of repairs.
