Rising living costs for European university students

Overview

University students in Italy and Germany are facing increasing financial pressures as a new academic semester begins.

In Italy, specifically near the University of Calabria in Quattromiglia, rising rental prices have forced students to pay between 300 and 450 euros per month for rooms. This trend disproportionately affects middle-income students who may not qualify for subsidies. To manage high fuel and living expenses, students are being encouraged to use carpooling and multimodal transport systems.

In Germany, students at Hochschule Esslingen are also struggling with the search for affordable housing and general living costs. Political groups such as Die Linke Esslingen have been engaging with students to advocate for BAföG reform, seeking higher, inflation-adjusted funding and regional rent subsidies. Meanwhile, in South Tyrol, the organization Südtiroler HochschülerInnenschaft (sh. asus) is providing administrative and social support to students across several regional cities to assist with academic integration.
