The 2026 global measles resurgence continues to escalate, driven by declining vaccination rates and misinformation. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts approximately 11 million infections globally this year, with the highest impact expected in Africa and Asia. Bangladesh is facing its most severe outbreak on record. The death toll has surpassed 1,000 children since March, with over 166,000 168,000 suspected cases and nearly 20,000 laboratory-confirmed infections reported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies this as the largest measles outbreak globally. Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain previously informed parliament that procurement policy changes under the interim government led to vaccine shortages, while political instability following the 2024 uprising caused the postponement of immunization programs. In response, the government, in coordination with the WHO, UNICEF, and the Gavi vaccine alliance, has launched an emergency nationwide vaccination drive, though hospitals remain overcrowded. In the United States, the epidemic has reached its highest annual case count since 1991. The CDC reports 2,903 confirmed infections since the start of 2026, with approximately 94% of cases linked to active outbreaks and 94% of those affected being unvaccinated or having unknown status. In Pennsylvania, confirmed cases have risen to 624 across 37 counties, resulting in 109 hospitalizations and two deaths. Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni confirmed the death of 6-week-old Mary Stoltzfus, whose infection was exacerbated by a genetic condition, and noted that another infant, Ivan Miller, died from a ruptured spleen while infected with measles. In Missouri, school-age vaccination rates of 89.5% remain below the 95% threshold required for community immunity. International transmission is also evident in Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru.
