Rivers State health facility enforcement operations

Overview

The Rivers State Ministry of Health has conducted enforcement operations to shut down numerous health facilities operating illegally or without proper registration. Initially, authorities closed 21 facilities, including hospitals, maternity homes, and diagnostic centres, across several local government areas such as Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor. These actions followed reports of over 150 facilities operating without supervision. During these operations, officials arrested three individuals for alleged quackery and investigated a clinic for suspected child-trafficking racketeering.

Subsequent enforcement actions resulted in the sealing of eight additional facilities and the arrest of four individuals. In one notable incident, suspects were apprehended at a residential compound while attempting to perform a thyroidectomy, during which one individual allegedly posed as a surgeon. The Ministry has warned that licensed practitioners working in substandard or unregistered facilities will also face penalties under the guidelines of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
