A series of road accidents in Lagos has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. An early incident on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road involved a Lexus SUV colliding with a pole, causing one death and three serious injuries. Later, three separate accidents occurred across the state, resulting in four deaths and seven injuries. These included a severe collision at Berger Bridge on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway and an incident on the Otedola Bridge where a diesel tanker plunged off the structure and caught fire. While authorities attribute these incidents to reckless driving and overloaded trucks, safety experts have pointed to slippery surfaces and problematic gradients on the Otedola Bridge. On Wednesday, October 28, a container-laden articulated truck overturned onto a Toyota Hiace bus on the Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that four men were killed and several others were injured. Preliminary investigations suggest the truck was traveling uphill at “excessive speed” when the driver lost control while attempting to avoid a collision, causing the vehicle and its container to fall onto the bus. In a separate incident that same day in Agege, a vehicle struck a solar-powered streetlight pole. This crash caused traffic obstructions but resulted in no reported casualties.
