2025 road fatality declines despite rising accidents

The 2025 safety reports from Brazil’s Alagoas state and Italy continue to show a marked fall in road‑related deaths while the total number of crashes rose modestly. In Alagoas, fatalities dropped 15.3% to 682, with accidents falling to 3,037. Motorcyclists accounted for 59% of the deaths. In Italy, national data for 2025 confirm a 5.3% decline in deaths to 2,868, marking the first time fatalities have dropped below 3,000 since 2021. However, accidents rose by 2.2% to 177,207, and injuries increased by 1.7%. Regional trends show varied outcomes: Puglia saw a 21.2% drop in deaths despite a 2% rise in accidents; Abruzzo recorded an 11.6% reduction in fatalities; and while Naples saw a 22.9% drop in deaths, its accidents increased by 5.0%. Conversely, Friuli-Venezia Giulia reported unchanged death tolls despite an 8.8% rise in incidents. Notably, micromobility deaths rose by 21.6%. Authorities are expanding preventive measures.
