Director Robert Eggers is advancing two major cinematic projects through Focus Features. The studio secured the rights to Eggers’ adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ following a competitive bidding war against A24, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. The production, with an estimated budget of $70 million, is expected to utilize period-accurate Elizabethan English and maintain Eggers’ signature dark, tragic aesthetic. Simultaneously, Focus Features is promoting Eggers’ upcoming medieval horror film, ‘Werwulf’. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie, the film follows a man in 14th-century England cursed with lycanthropy. To ensure historical authenticity, Eggers collaborated with two Oxford University professors who provided line-by-line corrections to the Middle English dialogue to align with the social classes of the era. Promotional efforts for ‘Werwulf’ have intensified with the release of a second trailer, which features a visceral werewolf transition. Actor Willem Dafoe, who portrays an old hunter, has praised the final cut, describing the film as “dark,” “unnerving,” “impressive,” and “beautiful,” noting that it avoids traditional horror tropes. He advised audiences not to let the title dictate their expectations, suggesting Eggers continues to excel at creating immersive, complete historical worlds. To enhance the aesthetic, Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke utilized an orthochromatic look to create a “hellish, flame-lit glow.” A Following a promotional pop-up event is scheduled for October 25 in Los Angeles, featuring original costumes and research materials it has been announced that ‘Werwulf’ will receive a limited 35mm theatrical release in collaboration with 17 United States locations. The Cinegogue. film, which was shot on 35mm black-and-white stock to achieve its authentic aesthetic, is set in 1305 and draws on medieval English folklore. The narrative involves a hunter enlisting peasants for a royal wolf hunt, a premise inspired by historical figures such as Peter Corbet. ‘Werwulf’ is scheduled for a United States release on December 25, 2026, and a United Kingdom and Ireland release on January 1, 2027.
