During a televised debate on August 2, 2026, Kennedy clashed with moderator Dana Bash over vaccine safety and his past statements, specifically regarding the scientific evidence for COVID-19 vaccines and his perceived responsibility for measles outbreaks. By late August, new documents emerged that appeared to contradict Kennedy’s previous testimony during his congressional confirmation process. While Kennedy had previously stated that a 2019 trip to Samoa had “nothing to do with vaccines,” records revealed he had sent a letter to the Samoan prime minister requesting to study the nation’s MMR vaccines following the deaths of two children. These records, obtained via a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, show Kennedy used the terms “vaccine” or “vaccination” eight times in his correspondence and suggested the deaths might be linked to manufacturing issues. The visit occurred months before a measles outbreak in Samoa that killed 83 people. This revelation has prompted Democratic senators, including Ron Wyden and Ed Markey, to call for investigations. Senator Wyden has specifically demanded a criminal investigation into whether Kennedy lied to Congress, while the watchdog group American Oversight has requested a Department of Justice probe into potential violations regarding false statements.
