Polish striker Robert Lewandowski joined Chicago Fire in June 2026, turning down a €200 million Saudi offer to stay in MLS after his contract with FC Barcelona expired. After a scoreless start, Lewandowski secured his first home victory on 1 August with a brace in a 2-1 win over Charlotte FC. He continued his form in the Leagues Cup, scoring a stoppage-time goal against Cruz Azul to help Chicago advance to the quarterfinals. On 15 August, Chicago Fire extended their winning streak to five consecutive victories with a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers. On 18 August, they reached six consecutive wins with a 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC, where Lewandowski converted a 68th-minute penalty. On 29 August, the Fire’s winning streak ended in a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Sounders. On 8 September, Lewandowski recorded both a goal and an assist in a 4-4 draw against Toronto FC, contributing to the club’s best unbeaten streak since 2017. Following the match at BMO Field, a Toronto FC supporter was filmed using vulgar language to insult Lewandowski and the large contingent of Polish fans in attendance. On 10 September, Chicago Fire played to a 1-1 draw against Inter Miami at a sold-out Soldier Field before a record crowd of over 63,000 spectators. The match featured a reunion of former Barcelona teammates Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi. Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 10th minute, marking his sixth goal of the season. The match was marked by late-game tension when Rodrigo De Paul confronted Lewandowski, allegedly saying, “Who the hell are you, idiot? I’ve won two Copa Americas and a World Cup... AND YOU?” On 12 September, Chicago Fire’s unbeaten streak ended with a 1-2 defeat against the New England Revolution.
