Rocket Lab Neutron rocket development delays
Overview
Rocket Lab has rescheduled the inaugural launch of its Neutron reusable medium-class rocket to 2027. The delay stems from manufacturing defects discovered in the carbon fiber composite components of the first-stage fuel tank.
CEO Peter Beck reported that engineers identified air voids between carbon fiber layers in the forward tank dome. These imperfections arose during the transition to automated fiber placement manufacturing methods. While the company has successfully produced an aft dome using revised processes, the forward dome requires further construction and inspection.
Despite these setbacks with the Neutron program, the company continues its Electron mission operations, recently completing its 98th successful Electron launch to deploy HawkEye 360 satellites.
