Archaeologists and researchers have uncovered 5th-century stone inscriptions in Turkey that document a long-standing tax fraud scheme within the Roman Empire.

Initial analysis of the fragments, dating to approximately 480 AD, revealed that tax collectors in the city of Stratonicea were enriching themselves by issuing payment certificates without specified values. This allowed officials to pocket the difference between collected funds and declared revenue. The corruption reportedly persisted for over 15 years and involved fiscal abuses on properties belonging to Placidia, the daughter of Emperor Valentinian III.

Further details indicate that the Praetorian Prefect of the East, Flavius Illus Pusaeus Dionysius, dispatched a special envoy from Constantinople to investigate the matter. The legal inscriptions record that the individuals involved in the fraud were ultimately sentenced to death.
