Roman silver coin hoard discovery in Wesseling

Overview

An exceptional hoard of 934 ancient Roman silver denarii, weighing approximately 3.1 kilograms, was discovered in an agricultural field near Wesseling, Germany. The find was made by amateur researcher Oliver Riedl, who alerted the LVR-Amt für Bodendenkmalpflege after detecting the coins with a metal detector.

Archaeological analysis, including X-rays, suggests the coins were stored in a ceramic container with organic material like straw. The collection spans several eras, with the oldest coins dating to 148 BC during the Roman Republic and the most recent from the reign of Emperor Hadrian (124–125 AD). A significant portion of the hoard belongs to the Flavian dynasty (69–96 AD).

Experts believe the treasure was intentionally buried for safekeeping, possibly due to a period of danger, though the owner likely died before they could retrieve it. While the region's military history initially led researchers to consider if the coins belonged to a Roman soldier, economic assessments are being used to explore other ownership possibilities. The treasure has been moved to the LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn for conservation.
