In late July 2026, AUR leader George Simion accused PSD minister Lia Olguța Vasilescu of attempting to bribe AUR MPs to support a minority PSD government. Legal analyst Adrian Toni Neacșu noted that under the Romanian Constitution, suspending the president and calling early parliamentary elections are mutually exclusive. Critics have alleged that AUR’s justifications mirror Russian propaganda, specifically regarding President Dan’s alleged failure to respond to unauthorized Ukrainian military operations on Romanian territory. Additionally, investigations revealed the website behind the suspension campaign was registered by a Moldovan web designer. By late August, the political landscape shifted as Simion announced AUR is willing to join a governing coalition, provided that Călin Georgescu is appointed as Prime Minister. However, AUR senator leader Petrișor Peiu later clarified that the party rejects forming a government through alliances with the PSD or PNL. Peiu stated that AUR is advancing efforts to suspend President Nicușor Dan due to his political attitude and is collecting signatures for a dismissal procedure. Peiu warned that AUR might boycott official consultations at Cotroceni Palace if they are treated as mere formalities, noting that recent votes alongside the PSD were isolated actions rather than a formal alliance.
