Romania is advancing its energy infrastructure through several key projects involving natural gas and electricity production. In early August, work commenced on a regulation-measurement station in Făgetu to extend natural gas services to the local area. Concurrently, the Mintia gas-fired power plant in Hunedoara entered its testing phase to feed electricity into the National Energy System. This plant, developed by Mass Global Energy Rom, aims for a commercial capacity of 1,100 MW by the end of 2026. By late August, two additional energy projects funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR)—CET Palas in Constanța and CET Hidrocarburi in Arad—were connected to the national grid. The Constanța plant provides 97 MW of cogeneration capacity, while the Arad facility produces over 30 MW. These facilities are expected to be fully operational for the upcoming cold season. ~~Additionally, Romania continues~~ Despite these advancements, the government faces regulatory and financial hurdles regarding decarbonization. Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that the closure of the Turceni and Craiova coal-fired plants will be delayed to ~~manage peak demand through electricity imports~~ ensure heating security for residents during the winter. This delay, aimed at avoiding social instability, may result in a penalty of up to 100 million euros from ~~Bulgaria via~~ the ~~EU common~~ European Commission for missing PNRR milestones. Furthermore, the ‘Casa Verde Baterii’ program has drawn criticism from prosumers, who claim the initiative excludes those who have already invested in energy ~~market.~~ storage systems.
