Romania expands free health screening campaigns

In July 2026, Romanian health organisations used public events to deliver free diagnostic services. The Pneumology Hospital in Sibiu offered spirometry tests at the Equilibrium Fest Summer event for World Lung Cancer Day, while the Association of Patients with Liver Diseases (APAH-RO) ran a ‘Your Liver Matters!’ campaign in Bucharest for World Hepatitis Day. A youth group in Satu Mare, together with the local PSD, provided blood-pressure and glucose checks and counselling on cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Building on these efforts, World Hepatitis Day saw authorities promote a broader hepatitis-screening push. The Fundeni Clinical Institute, Grigore T. Popa Iaşi University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the National Public Health Institute launched the EU-co-financed LIVE(RO)3 project, training 800 primary-care doctors, standardising screening protocols and deploying an electronic system to track chronic liver disease. The Maramureș Health Insurance House urged the public to use free, fully reimbursed hepatitis B and C tests under the national insurance scheme to meet the 2030 goal of eliminating viral hepatitis. In late July, respiratory health awareness expanded as the Tudor Vladimirescu Pneumology Hospital in Dobrița also announced free pulmonary investigations, including spirometry and peak-flow testing, for patients with referrals. By August, the focus shifted toward vulnerable populations through targeted cancer screening. The ROCCAS 4 SE project in Năvodari, implemented by the Sfântul Apostol Andrei Constanța County Emergency Clinical Hospital, began offering free colorectal cancer screening for individuals aged 50 to 74 in marginalized communities. Simultaneously, the CLARA project in the Mureș region, led by the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, provided free cervical cancer screening for women aged 25 to 65 facing socio-economic difficulties, including those without medical insurance. In September, cancer prevention efforts expanded further.
