Eurostat data released on 23 July 2026 showed that Romania’s share of renewable energy in final consumption held at 25.6% in 2025, slightly below the EU average of 26.2%. While Romania’s renewable share in the electricity sector reached 49.87%, trailing leaders like Austria and Sweden, the country outperformed Germany and France. On 24 July 2026, Romania announced infrastructure expansions funded by the EU Modernisation Fund. The state rail operator CFR signed a 97.34 million-lei contract to electrify the Brașov–Podu Olt–Sibiu–Târgu Mureș corridor to reduce diesel use. Additionally, a consortium began constructing a 14,000-panel photovoltaic park near Iași’s CET II Holboca plant, expected to generate 9.85 GWh annually. By August 2026, reports from Transelectrica indicated signs of stabilization in the national energy system for the first half of the year. Net energy production increased by 7% while domestic consumption remained stable, contributing to a 68% reduction in the physical external deficit compared to H1 2025. Although Romania has not yet returned to being a net exporter, physical export flows increased by 52%. On the macroeconomic side, Romania’s current account deficit for H1 2026 rose slightly to 1,420.2 million euros, and total external debt reached 232,772 million euros as of June 30, 2026. ~~However, new~~ Newer data indicates Romania is facing an energy deficit and acting as a net importer of electricity. Preliminary 2025 figures show net electricity production at 49.5 TWh against internal consumption of 53.2 TWh. To manage market conditions and low weekend demand, Complexul Energetic Oltenia (CEO) announced a controlled shutdown of Energy Group no. 5 at the Rovinari electrocentral unit starting August 22, 2026. The unit is scheduled to be resynchronized with the National Energy System on August 24, 2026, alongside Group No. 5 at the Turceni ~~plant, to meet rising demand at the start of the work week.~~ plant.
