Authorities are also exploring technical solutions, such as a temporary dam, to redirect water toward the plant’s cooling pump suction area. Nuclearelectrica has stated that the shutdown of Units 1 and 2 poses no risk to nuclear security, as the facility utilizes redundant cooling systems and maintains sufficient water reserves. The operator is utilizing this controlled downtime to conduct maintenance activities and enhance plant resilience. However, State Secretary Cristian Bușoi noted that the National Energy System is currently lacking approximately 20% of the continuous electricity production typically provided by the plant. plant, an absence of roughly 1,300 MW. This shortage has contributed to market volatility; in September, the average Romanian electricity spot price (PZU) reached 927 lei/MWh. To compensate for the lack of nuclear and hydroelectric output, the country has relied heavily on electricity imports, fluctuating between 1,500 and 2,500 MW.
