Romania sovereign credit rating status

Overview

S&P Global Ratings has reaffirmed Romania’s sovereign credit rating at ‘BBB-’ with a negative outlook. The agency cited progress in fiscal adjustment and the absorption of European funds as drivers of economic activity through public investment.

However, the negative outlook persists due to risks involving political instability, a high current account deficit, external financing needs, and the implementation of fiscal consolidation for 2027-2028. Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare noted that while maintaining investment grade status is a significant result, the country must meet 2026 deficit targets and establish a credible 2027 budget to stabilize the outlook.
