Romanian economic, consumer, and demographic decline
Overview
Romania is experiencing significant economic shifts characterized by a sharp decline in foreign direct investment (FDI) and changing consumer behaviors. In the first half of 2026, FDI fell by approximately 82%, dropping from 3.7 billion euros to just over 600 million euros. This downturn was driven by a decline in capital participation, intra-group loans, and reinvested profits, which turned negative as foreign companies withdrew more capital than they earned locally.
Concurrently, the Romanian fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market saw its lowest value growth in five years, at 3.4%. While market value increased, sales volumes trended negatively, suggesting inflation is the primary driver of value growth. Consumer sentiment is notably pessimistic, with nearly two-thirds of Romanians expecting their financial situation to worsen over the next year. These pressures have led to an increased reliance on discount retailers, which now hold over 30% of the market share. Consumers are increasingly engaging in ‘cherry-picking’, purchasing smaller baskets focused heavily on promotional items.
Inflation was reported at 8.2% in July 2026, and managers in the retail and construction sectors anticipate rising prices, with construction work prices expected to trend upward with a conjunctural balance of +41%.
These economic pressures are compounded by demographic decline. Romania’s resident population fell to approximately 19.04 million by January 1, 2026. Although 2025 saw a positive international migration balance, it could not offset a negative natural increase of 104,100 people. Additionally, the population is aging, with citizens aged 65 and over rising to 20.5%.
