A football match between Sepsi and Dinamo in Romania triggered a scandal following reports of anti-Hungarian, xenophobic chants from away supporters. The incidents led to a brief two-minute stoppage under anti-discrimination protocols, though reports suggest the offensive shouting continued after play resumed. Árpád Antal, the mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe, filed official complaints with the Romanian Football Federation and UEFA, stating that the Hungarian community in Romania deserves to feel safe in stadiums. Sepsi owner László Diószegi reported that the verbal abuse lasted approximately 20 minutes. In response, Dinamo official Andrei Nicolescu claimed that home fans had provoked them by singing in the Hungarian language, a claim dismissed by local officials. Broader controversies have since emerged within Romanian football. In the Superliga, tensions escalated following racist chants directed at CFR Cluj coach Marius Șumudică. Șumudică condemned the incidents and threatened to withdraw his team from the pitch, while former player Adrian Mutu criticized the coach, labeling him a “major instigator” in football. Additionally, CSM Slatina has formally rejected allegations made by Olt County Council President Marius Oprescu. Oprescu claimed club leadership and players were involved in rigged sports betting and were under investigation, allegations which the club intends to contest in court.
