Romanian institutional and post-communist transition

Romania is experiencing significant institutional and social challenges related to its post-communist transition and the legacy of its security structures. Analysts describe a deepening internal conflict characterized by institutional decay, where executive, judicial, and legislative powers are reportedly compromised. This environment is defined by a struggle over state decision-making infrastructure and the persistence of ‘securism’ within modern political and economic systems.

Socially, the country faces rising communist nostalgia. Research indicates that a majority of respondents view the communist regime positively, with 66.2% holding a positive or very positive view of Nicolae Ceaușescu. This sentiment is particularly strong among citizens over 60 and those with primary education, though 45% of young people also expressed positive views of the pre-1989 era.

These social trends coincide with ongoing difficulties in reforming Romania’s security services. Despite integration into NATO and updated intelligence legislation, observers note that a lack of credible lustration and weak parliamentary oversight continue to hinder the establishment of a transparent rule of law.
