The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) confirmed the framework for the 2026‑27 Liga 2 season, issuing a 21‑stage fixture list that runs from 1 August 2026 to February 2027. On 29 July the Executive Committee voted unanimously to let CSA Steaua compete under the historic “Steaua București” name and approved the club names FC Bihor Oradea and CSM Reșița. The same meeting adopted a new Cooperation Regulation between Superliga (Liga 1) and Liga 2 clubs, limiting each Superliga side to five eligible players born on or after 1 January 2004, fixing contracts to one season, and making the parent club responsible for payments. A double‑registration system permits up to three U21 players from a Superliga club to appear for its Liga 2 partner with defined minute‑allocation thresholds and sanctions for breaches. Junior competitions now feature expanded disciplinary procedures for parents and supporters, a “Silent Day” where only players may speak, and scoring caps in U13/U14 Elite leagues to reduce large goal gaps. The FRF also clarified that the World Cup “identification‑error” VAR rule will not be used domestically, although VAR may still intervene on corner‑kick and free‑kick errors. The season officially kicked off on 1 August with 22 clubs—including five promoted from Liga 3, three relegated from Liga 1, and established sides such as Steaua București, Dinamo București and Politehnica Timișoara—playing the opening match between CS Gloria Bistrița and CSC Șelimbăr. Coaches highlighted recent signings and the integration of new goalkeepers as clubs aim to solidify their squads during the early weeks of competition. A day before the first round, FC Hermannstadt announced its withdrawal from Liga 2 due to insolvency and loss of TV revenue.
