Romanian political activity has recently focused on ministerial performance and the leadership of public media institutions. In August, government ministers saw varying levels of media visibility. Radu Miruță (USR) led rankings due to his management of the energy crisis related to low Danube water levels, crisis, military visits, and motorway progress. Alexandru Nazare (PNL) also maintained visibility regarding sovereign rating discussions. USR leader Dominic Fritz reported that his party’s ministers exceeded PNRR reforestation targets and implemented consular reforms. By September, the focus shifted to the leadership of public broadcasters. Following a Constitutional Court ruling that declared previous management appointments unconstitutional—stating that board seat allocations failed to respect the proportional weight of political groups in Parliament—the Romanian Parliament appointed interim heads for Televiziunea Română (TVR) and Radio România (SRR) for 60-day terms. Journalist Sorina Matei, nominated by the AUR party, was named interim Director General of TVR, while Răzvan Dincă, proposed by the PSD, was appointed to lead Radio România. These appointments followed the removal of previous leaders, including Adriana Săftoiu at TVR and Robert Schwartz at SRR. The move sparked significant political debate, with the PNL and USR parties accusing the PSD of engaging in a “political deal” or “political barter” with AUR, claiming the PSD supported AUR’s candidate for TVR in exchange for AUR supporting a PSD candidate for the public radio. Critics have described these developments as a threat to democracy and a risk to the independence of public information.
