Romania is observing significant political anniversaries, most notably the centenary of the founding of the National Peasants' Party (PNŢ). The party was established in 1926 through a merger of the Peasants' Party and the National Romanian Party. In commemorations of the centenary, President Nicușor Dan highlighted the party’s historical role in shaping Romanian democratic consciousness. He noted that leaders such as Iuliu Maniu and Ion Mihalache promoted values of morality and loyalty to the state, and emphasized the party’s history of opposing dictatorship and enduring communist repression. Dan linked these historical principles to Romania’s modern Euro-Atlantic aspirations and called for a reaffirmation of democracy. Additionally, the country is recognizing the 185th anniversary of the birth of Ion I. Câmpineanu, a founding member of the National Liberal Party who served in various high-ranking ministerial roles and as the first governor of the National Bank of Romania. Further celebrations include a cultural event at the Iuliu Maniu Memorial House in Bădăcin titled ‘Arc peste timp: de la Maniu la Brâncuși’, scheduled for October 17, 2026. This program, which features a violin and piano concert, includes the launch of the book ‘Partidul Național Țărănesc la Centenar (1926–2026)’. Authored by Marin Pop, Liviu Petrina, Alexandru Popescu, Gheorghe Ciuhandu, and Mihai Grigoriu, the volume examines the party’s role in interwar democracy and modern Romanian political history. The event seeks to establish a symbolic connection between Iuliu Maniu and the artist Constantin Brâncuși.
