Rome urban security and illegal street activities
Overview
Authorities in Rome have taken steps to address various forms of illegal street activity in the city center. Initially, the Rome Police Commissioner issued urban access bans against six Romanian nationals involved in a “three bells” street scam near the Trevi Fountain. These individuals, aged between 21 and 56, were prohibited from entering public venues within the monumental perimeter of the historic center following investigations into their clandestine betting game.
Following these incidents, Rome’s Councilor for Tourism and Large Events, Alessandro Onorato, called for national intervention to combat organized illegal street vending. Onorato described these groups as structured criminal associations that have allegedly threatened local administrators. In response to these security challenges, the Ministry of the Interior is implementing a security strategy in Rome. This plan involves the use of fixed and mobile checkpoints, security corridors, and real-time monitoring to isolate violent elements and protect urban mobility during large crowds and major events.
