~~Lukaku struggles for rhythm~~ Lukaku's performance and ~~playing time~~ role at Fenerbahçe and Belgium

Romelu Lukaku’s tenure at Fenerbahçe has been marked by significant difficulty. After his transfer from Napoli for approximately six million euros plus bonuses, the 33-year-old striker struggled to find rhythm, failing to record a goal or assist in his first seven official appearances. Following a recent 0-0 draw against Gaziantep FK, where Lukaku received his first start but was substituted after 64 minutes, criticism has intensified. Journalist Emre Bol described the performance as ‘ridiculous’ given Lukaku’s physical profile, noting that opponents should feel as though they are ‘hitting a wall’ when contesting him. In response to the striker’s lack of output, Fenerbahçe manager İsmail Kartal initiated a specialized training program during the international break to improve Lukaku’s physical conditioning and tactical integration. As scrutiny continues, Turkish media reports suggest Fenerbahçe may look to recruit a new striker, such as Folarin Balogun, during the winter transfer window if Lukaku does not improve. This lack of form has also impacted his standing with the Belgium national team. Ahead of a UEFA Nations League match against Turkey, head coach Mark van Bommel clarified that the veteran striker is not guaranteed a starting position. Van Bommel noted that selection decisions depend on specific tactical needs, such as pace, and cited Lukaku’s limited playing time at Fenerbahçe as a factor. Meanwhile, Philippe Albert has advised the coach that Lukaku should focus on mentally preparing for a substitute role to make an impact, a strategy previously successful during the World Cup. During a Nations League match against France, Lukaku earned his first start under Van Bommel. Although he did not score in the 4-1 defeat, analysts noted his physical presence and ability to pressure the defense for 70 minutes.
