Rural service and funding challenges in Wales

The Welsh Government has initiated measures to address challenges in rural areas, beginning with a £447,400 investment to bolster the planning workforce. This funding includes the Pathways to Planning bursary and a new Mid and West Wales Rural Planners bursary, aimed at recruiting and retaining qualified planners in regions such as Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Powys, and various national parks.

Following these workforce developments, attention has shifted to broader fiscal concerns. Jake Berriman, leader of Powys County Council, has advocated for a revision of the local government funding formula, arguing that current models do not adequately cover the high costs of service delivery in sparsely populated regions. Powys faces a projected funding shortfall of £9.7 million in 2027/28, potentially reaching a cumulative deficit of £28.8 million by 2030/31. In response, the Welsh Government has commissioned a review of the funding system to examine factors such as rurality, sparsity, and demographic changes.
