Investigations by The Sunday Times, Danwatch, and the Dossier Center have revealed that Russia has modernized and reactivated a secret, Cold War-era command complex known as Object 1335 or Facility 1335. Located deep beneath Kosvinsky Kamen in the Ural Mountains, near the village of Kytlym, the facility is buried under more than 1,000 feet of granite to withstand advanced bunker-busting munitions. The site serves as a central component of the Perimeter system, referred to in the West as the ‘Dead Hand’ nuclear retaliation strategy. This system is designed to ensure that automated nuclear launch commands can be transmitted even if Russia’s national leadership is and communications are incapacitated during a surprise attack. Procurement records from 2018 to 2024 indicate massive construction and upgrade efforts, including the acquisition of vast quantities of steel, concrete, and electrical cabling. The facility reportedly contains at least 24 underground chambers and tunnels extending approximately 1.5 miles, equipped with specialized ventilation systems to filter radioactive, chemical, and biological fallout. Experts suggest While experts continue to analyze the revival system’s exact level of this infrastructure reflects full automation, the scale of these upgrades suggests a heightened focus on significant reinforcement of Russia’s nuclear command survivability and control infrastructure amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
