Diplomatic tensions between Russia, Moldova, and Romania have escalated regarding Moldovan sovereignty and regional influence. Initially, Russia rejected Romania’s claims of airspace violations by Russian drones and refused to withdraw its ambassador from Bucharest, with official Aleksei Fadeev stating, “We see no reason to imitate the theatrical gestures of others.” During this period, Russia also honored its ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Ozerov, for his handling of drone-related incidents in Moldovan territory. Relations further strained following the appointment of former Romanian Economy Minister Claudiu Năsui to Moldova’s Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the move, accusing pro-Western authorities in Chișinău of “openly handing the country over to Bucharest” and suggesting that the granting of Moldovan citizenship to Năsui signaled a loss of Moldovan independence. On August 27, 2026, Claudiu Năsui and Eugeniu Osmochescu were officially sworn in as ministers at the Presidency in the presence of President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Vasile Tofan. Năsui assumed the role of Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, focusing on economic growth, investment, and state-owned enterprise reform. Osmochescu was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, with a mandate to adapt agriculture to climate change and meet EU accession requirements. Prime Minister Tofan defined the government’s priorities as a “European economy, efficient state.” The appointments have maintained the existing friction with Moscow, as Zakharova reiterated accusations that the government is “handing the country over to Bucharest” due to an inability to select domestic candidates.
