By late August 2026, China has transitioned from seasonal testing to launching its first regular container trade route through the Arctic. Authorized by the Kremlin, Sea Legend is establishing a service with weekly departures through early October, connecting Chinese hubs like Ningbo and Nansha to European ports including Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Gdynia. Fang Yi, director of Haijie Shipping, noted the route provides protection for temperature-sensitive cargo from summer heat, avoids congestion, and offers more reliable schedules. The transit from Ningbo to Felixstowe takes approximately 20 days, nearly half the time of conventional routes. On August 19, the Xin Xin Hai-1, operated by Newnew Shipping Company, successfully completed a transit from Tianjin to the Russian Arctic port of Murmansk. This milestone, involving Sea Legend, highlights the increasing viability of the Northern Sea Route, which offers a potential 40% reduction in travel time and costs compared to traditional lanes currently facing instability. On August 24, a Chinese business delegation visited Murmansk to inspect port facilities, further underscoring deepening economic and geopolitical ties. Simultaneously, Russian oil tankers carrying up to one million tons of crude to China have begun utilizing unprecedentedly northern routes, traveling north of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago to latitudes beyond 81.5°N. This detour adds roughly 1,000 kilometers to the journey compared to the standard Vilkitsky Strait passage. Experts suggest these maneuvers are driven by fears of Ukrainian strikes and European sanctions. To support these operations, Russia is constructing a massive new oil port in Sever Bay, part of a broader effort to increase total Northern Sea Route cargo to 70 million tons annually by the end of the decade. On September 12, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Roman Chekushov confirmed that consultations are underway with China and India to enhance cooperation along the Northern Sea Route.
