Russia has utilized various missile technologies in its attacks against Ukraine. In September 2026, reports indicated the deployment of modified RM-48U ballistic missiles. Originally missiles, originally designed as aerial targets for air defense training, these missiles are being repurposed targets, to overwhelm defenses while preserving advanced weaponry like Iskander and Zircon missiles. Analysis suggests these modified missiles rely on foreign components, including a laser gyroscope module from the French company 3SP Technologies. By October 2026, the Russian military deployed Kh-22/32 hypersonic cruise missiles against Ukrainian territory for the first time since July 2026. These strikes, launched from Tu-22M3 bombers, were part of a larger assault involving Iskander-M or KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and hundreds of Shahed kamikaze drones. Ukrainian air defense systems reported intercepting or neutralizing 293 targets during a single major engagement between October 16 and October 17. Following these engagements, Ukrainian military command acknowledged significant challenges in countering Kh-32 cruise missiles. Launched from Tu-22M3 Backfire bombers, these missiles reach speeds of 5,400 km/h with an operational range of up to 1,000 km. Reports indicate that U.S.-supplied Patriot MIM-104 systems are unable to effectively intercept these high-speed targets. This technical difficulty coincides with reports that Ukraine’s Patriot missile stockpiles are nearing depletion due to intensified strikes. Concurrently, political tensions have emerged from the United States. Former President Donald Trump has criticized Ukraine for strikes on Russian oil refineries, citing potential impacts on global energy supplies, and has called for Ukraine to hold elections, questioning the peace negotiation intentions of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
