On 10 August, Russia’s Supreme Court barred the liberal Yabloko party from participating in the State Duma elections scheduled for 18–20 September. The ruling follows a lawsuit filed by the pro-Kremlin Rodina party, which accused Yabloko of copyright infringement and promoting extremist content by hosting materials related to the international LGBT movement. In addition to these claims, the party and the Russian financial monitoring service alleged that Yabloko received undeclared foreign campaign funding, specifically citing approximately 178 euros from the United States and Germany. Yabloko leader Nikolai Rybakov rejected the allegations, describing the legal proceedings as an “unconstitutional attack on freedom of thought” intended to eliminate political competition. He argued that the party’s platform, which advocates for a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine, is viewed as a threat by authorities. The party has announced its intention to appeal the decision within the five-day window provided. Following the ruling, supporters gathered outside the Moscow courthouse to protest the decision, with some carrying apples as a symbol of the party.
