Russia has intensified aerial operations against Ukraine, specifically targeting infrastructure and institutions in Kyiv. On September 4, a drone strike hit the headquarters of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), reportedly aiming for the office of the head of the security service. This attack resulted in five injuries and was described by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha as a “serious escalation of the conflict” occurring as American mediators prepared for diplomatic visits. Following this, on September 8, Russia launched a massive assault involving 166 drones and numerous cruise and ballistic missiles. During this wave, a Shahed drone struck the headquarters of the ‘We Are Ukraine’ and ‘We Are Ukraine+’ TV channels during a live broadcast of the United News telethon, damaging the newsroom and injuring at least five people. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a deliberate attack on journalists. The broader aerial campaign caused multiple deaths and damage across 29 locations, including residential buildings and schools, shortly after the departure of US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner from Kyiv. In the capital, strikes hit residential high-rises, such as a building in the Dniprovskyi district, causing fires and injuries. Ukrainian officials air defenses reported intercepting a significant portion of the incoming projectiles, including 142 drones and 31 cruise missiles. However, the attacks have emphasized highlighted ongoing challenges for Ukrainian air defenses, particularly regarding the increasing use of faster, jet-powered drones by Russian forces. Ukrainian officials continue to emphasize a critical need for increased air defense resources to counter ongoing ballistic missile threats.
