Russian archaeological coin discoveries

Overview

Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have made significant numismatic discoveries in different regions of Russia.

In Torzhok, researchers unearthed a collection of 409 gold rubles minted between 1848 and 1911. The find, valued at over $500,000, includes coins from the reigns of Tsars Nicholas I, Alexander III, and Nicholas II. The treasure is slated for preservation at the National Museum of History and Ethnography.

In Kolomna, rescue excavations revealed a massive hoard of more than 2,600 medieval silver dengi coins contained within a decorated ceramic jug. Described as the largest intact Russian coin hoard known from the first half of the 15th century, the collection includes over 350 previously unknown coin varieties from the reigns of Grand Prince Vasily I Dmitrievich and Vasily II Vasilyevich.
