Russian banks advance regulated crypto services

Entities: Sberbank · Alexander Vedyakhin · Bank of Russia · State Duma · Russian Federation Council

Overview

Since early July 2026, Russia’s major banks have moved to launch regulated digital‑asset offerings under the law that took effect on 1 September 2026. Sberbank confirmed on 26 July 2026 that its full‑scale cryptocurrency trading platform and digital depository will go live on 1 December 2026, reiterating the timetable set by First Deputy Chairman Alexander Vedyakhin. The system will record ownership, handle most transactions off‑chain via active wallets, and provide custodial and brokerage services for institutional and qualified retail clients. Listing criteria remain: tokens must average a market‑cap of at least 5 trillion rubles and a daily volume of at least 1 trillion rubles over the prior two years. Qualified investors can trade with limits ten times higher than the 300 000‑ruble cap for non‑qualified investors, who must pass a knowledge test. Retail crypto payments stay prohibited, and mandatory use of licensed intermediaries will be enforced from July 2027. Alfa‑Bank continues developing its own custodian and institutional crypto suite, targeting rollout through 2026‑27.
