Russia is advancing its domestic aerospace capabilities through the development of specialized materials and engines designed to ensure technological autonomy. The company ITEKMA has commenced mass production of a high-temperature carbon-fiber composite polymer. This material, capable of operating between –190 °C and 450 °C, is utilized in MC-21 transport aircraft and PD-8 and PD-14 turbofan engines. The manufacturing process is entirely domestic, intended to eliminate reliance on foreign suppliers. Building on these material advancements, the PD-8 turbofan engine has reached a stage of readiness for mass production. While some experts, such as flight safety official Andrey Patrakov, raised concerns regarding technical risks in the combustion chamber and automated control systems due to the accelerated development timeline, aviation expert Oleg Panteleev has defended the engine. Panteleev stated that the engine has passed “rigorous testing” and that strict aviation inspection standards were maintained to ensure safety. The PD-8 is intended to replace has since officially received certification, a milestone achieved by the United Engine Corporation (ODK) after a six-year design and manufacturing cycle. This development was driven by long-standing technical challenges with the French-made SaM146 engines used on Be-200 firefighting planes Superjet aircraft, including frequent component failures and Sukhoi high maintenance costs.
