Russian drone incursions in Moldova

Overview

In July 2026 a Russian‑manufactured Geran‑2 (Shahed‑136) drone entered Moldovan airspace during a night raid on Ukraine’s Odesa region and crashed near Copanca in the Căușeni district. The aircraft exploded on impact, igniting a fire but causing no injuries or significant damage. Moldovan authorities secured the site, safely detonated the remaining payload and opened an investigation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal protest to the Russian ambassador‑designate and called for respect of Moldova’s sovereignty, while the EU announced €120 million to bolster the country’s air‑defence capabilities.

A few weeks later, in early August, police in the Cahul district recovered fragments of a Geran‑2 drone near the village of Văleni. Technical analysis confirmed the debris as part of the same Russian‑made attack drone. No casualties or damage were reported, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs again condemned the breach as part of a broader Russian drone campaign spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders. Investigations continued to determine how the drone entered Moldovan territory.

The two incidents illustrate a pattern of repeated Russian drone violations of Moldovan airspace, prompting diplomatic protests, forensic investigations, and calls for enhanced air‑defence measures.
