Russian drone technology and defense developments

Russia is advancing both offensive drone capabilities and defensive countermeasures. On the technological front, new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified that resemble ‘Lancet’ loitering munitions but utilize gasoline engines instead of electric motors, potentially providing longer flight durations and greater autonomy. Additionally, a patent has been filed for a 1,000-watt optical jamming system that uses high-intensity LED matrices to saturate drone optical sensors and disrupt computer vision algorithms.

In response to drone strikes on facilities such as Yandex, VKontakte, and Sberbank, the Russian Ministry of Digital Development has issued recommendations to protect data centers. These centers are categorized into three levels (K1, K2, and K3) based on their strategic importance to state functions and the economy. Proposed security measures include shielding equipment, cooling systems, and power supplies from shockwaves and shrapnel, as well as reducing the aerial visibility of these sites. Implementing these protections is estimated to increase service costs by approximately 10%.
