The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused Western intelligence agencies, in coordination with Ukraine, of planning a provocation to frame Russia for the illegal supply of weapons to drug cartels and organized crime groups in Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. The SVR claims the operation involves transporting Russian-made weapons, reportedly captured by Ukrainian forces, to Latin American nations. The agency asserts the plan includes the preparation of forged audio and video recordings, alongside falsified documentation, to provide fake evidence of Russian military involvement in these arms transfers through intermediaries. The SVR characterized these potential actions as part of an ongoing information war intended to undermine Russia’s relations with Latin American countries and pressure their governments to adopt anti-Russian policies. The Russian intelligence service did not specify which Western nation is orchestrating the plan, nor did it provide public evidence to support its claims. The SVR further alleges that forged documents are being prepared to falsely implicate members of the Russian Armed Forces in these activities. As of the latest reports, the governments of Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela, as well as Ukraine, have not issued official responses to these allegations. In a separate development, Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Russian Far East and the Kuril Islands has been interpreted as a strategic effort to assert Russian interests in the Indo-Pacific amid increasing military cooperation between the United States, Japan, and Australia.
